Early Childhood Education Working Towards Your Diploma (2021-2025)

Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Early Childhood Education (ECE) program gives you the knowledge and skills you need to work in a variety of childcare settings.

Our “Working Toward Your Diploma” program is part of Saskatchewan Polytechnic's ECE Diploma program and is offered on a course-by-course basis.

Become a Level III Early Childhood Educator

When you graduate from the ECE diploma you are eligible to apply to become a licensed Level III Early Childhood Educator (ECE) through the Government of Saskatchewan. If you plan on becoming a licensed child care Centre Director, you must have your Ministry ECE Level III certification. If you are interested in going further, you will be able to transfer some of your credits to the University of Regina's or the University of Saskatchewan’s Bachelor of Education degree program in Elementary Education.

Requirements:

  • To qualify you must have
    • Grade 12 with English A and B 30 or pass an Accuplacer test with the required score.
    • English Language Requirement
    • These are required and there is no longer an Unclassified acceptance to this program.

 

  • You need to apply to the ECE Working Towards Your Diploma program by completing an online application form, plus your high school and any post-secondary transcripts, sent to:

  • You may come into this program even if you already have some of the courses listed.
  • You must be committed to attending classes on the listed dates. 
  • The number of class hours are based on the credit hours and credit units.

Notes:

  • This diploma program will be delivered over multiple years with a revolving schedule of repeating classes so students can apply at any time and upon acceptance can register for classes on a part-time basis. 
  • First a student must apply, then upon acceptance letter will be able to register and pay for classes online.
  • There is space for 15 students in each module. 
  • Spots will be secured with a paid registration.
  • Registrations will close 1 week before the start date of the module.
  • For each module, there will be at least 3 days where you will have face-to-face classes and there will be at least 4 days of virtual classes you will need to attend. 
  • BOOKS - you are responsible to order your books from the Saskpoly bookstore.  We suggest you order books at least 2 weeks before your class starts.  More details to follow in July.
  • CANCELLATIONS:  If you choose not to take a course you must cancel 3 business days or more before the course starts to receive a refund.  If you cancel less than 3 business days before no refund will be received.

** If you have not completed your ECE Cerficiate of Achievement courses, we highly reccomend doing so before beginning courses in the Working Towards Your Diploma program. These 3 courses are also required to receive your diploma. https://www.cumberlandcollege.sk.ca/index.php?id=190

Early Childhood Education Working Towards Your Diploma allows registration in the following courses

(ADMIN208) Introduction to Administration of Early Childhood Education (March 9th - April 22nd)

You will be introduced to the administrative knowledge and skills that are useful for early learning and care programs. You will study operating structures, policies, and procedures related to the administration of early learning and childcare programs, including indigenous early learning and childcare programs. You will develop skills in using program evaluation tools.


Prerequisites:

Prerequisites(s): PRAC 119 or PRAC 105 or PRAC 181


(ECE 100) - Introduction to Early Childhood Education (October 6th - November 19th)

You will study the values, roots and the practices of early childhood education from historical and global perspectives. You will explore the image of the child and the principles of emergent curriculum from a holistic perspective. The course identifies current practices and models which support quality in early learning and care environments. This course will introduce Indigenous philosophies that guide early childhood education.


(ECE 109) Curriculum Design in Early Childhood Education 2 (December 1st - January 21st)

You will design a responsive and culturally relevant curriculum for young children through the exploration of authentic materials. You will practice implementing a variety of developmentally appropriate experiences.

Prerequisites(s): ECE 108


(ECE 221) Observation and Documentation 2 (May 4th - June 17th)

You will apply a variety of observation methods and tools used to collect an ethical, objective and holistic view of a child.
